Under the National Health Reform the Government is developing a new framework for funding public hospitals, and has allocated an extra $19.8 billion in funding for public hospitals through to 2019/20.

These reforms will see changes within the states & territories to have their hospitals:

• Increase the number of hospital beds;
• Ensure shorter elective surgery waiting times in public hospitals;
• Deliver quicker access to emergency department treatment; and
• Fund hospitals on the basis of services provided.
