Yes
What happens if I can’t get my old unit outlines as evidence?
- Can clinic hours be met by observation of another AEP or do I have to physically treat patients? I am not allowed to treat some
Hours cannot be claimed for student observation of the appointed supervisor or other practitioner. Hours claimed must be those that involve direct contact with the patient, such as, treatment, assessment, reporting, programme development case reviews and case management. Hours claimed may also include time invested by the supervisor in providing training to perform clinically relevant tasks. For example, assessment protocols, interview and communication skills, treatment techniques or case analysis.
- Is it possible to arrange ‘distance supervision’?
Supervision completed by distance or without direct contact with the supervisor will not be accepted as clinical hours.
- What happens if there is no appropriate supervisor available?
Clinical hours can only be claimed when supervised by an appropriate person. This may mean that you’ll need to travel to source the appropriate supervision.
- Can I do my 140 hours with ‘apparently healthy clientele’ under the supervision of a Cert IV Fitness Trainer?
Not unless they also meet the criteria above for appropriate supervision for hours claimed with apparently healthy clientele.
- What do you mean by ‘appropriately supervised’?
Supervisor(s) of students for the clinical practicum must be one of these (i) an AEP, or (ii) an exercise professional with or capable of attaining, full membership of AAESS or (iii) a university-trained allied health professional with experience in exercise delivery. Clinical supervisors must have experience working with clients with the specific conditions with which the student is seeking experience.
- Can I use my 140 hours required for full membership towards both my full membership application and my AEP application?
Yes, you can use the same hours for both, but when you are claiming them for your AEP application, these hours must be in the area of “exercise delivery” [assessments, prescription, leadership, evaluation, etc] for apparently healthy or clinical clients (and therefore NOT in areas such as sports coaching, sports and event management, recreation management, or small business management, and like). Furthermore, you will need to provide evidence that these hours were appropriately supervised.
- 140 hours in each of the 3 areas only equals 420 hours?
You need to achieve at least 140 hours in the 3 areas – the remainder of the hours can come from either neuromuscular / musculoskeletal clients or metabolic / cardiopulmonary clients (as together these two areas need to total at least 360 hours).
This element of the criteria was designed to provide the applicant with some flexibility and scope for specialization.
- Can you tell me the breakdown for the AEP clinical hours?
Total clinical experience: minimum of 500 hours total, comprising minima of 140 hours for apparently healthy clients, 140 hours for neuromuscular / musculoskeletal clients, and 140 hours for metabolic / cardiopulmonary clients. The total number of clinical hours for the two major areas of neuromuscular / musculoskeletal and metabolic / cardiopulmonary must be at least 360 hours. That is, one or both of the major areas needs to total more than the minimum of 140 hours.
- Do I need to be a full member of AAESS to be able to apply for AEP?
The candidate must have previously met all criteria for eligibility as a full member of the AAESS to be accredited as an AEP. The criteria for full membership mandate skills and competencies related to working with low risk clientele. Accreditation as an AEP provides a broader range of skills and competencies related to working with individuals with chronic and complex conditions. An application for full membership may be lodged at the same time as an application for AEP.
- When did the new AEP criteria come in to effect?
January 1, 2008.
