Collaboration between sports coaches, athletes, support staff and administrators to achieve performance outcome goals in sporting competition is considered important when designing and delivering athlete development programs. In this process, the coach needs to show leadership by clarifying roles, standards, values, and ideals, as well as establishing how the sports program should operate. Importantly, every stakeholder must align to these aspects for team effectiveness to be established and maintained. In this session, Jamie will share his experiences and research on how coaches, sports science and medical staff can gain a competitive advantage by working collaboratively and cooperatively.
Presented by Jamie Youngson
Jamie Youngson is the Head of Athletic Performance with the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU), where his role is to lead and manage the Qld Reds Academy Athletic Performance Program (Senior and Junior Academies). Overall, Jamie has spent 16 years working across all levels of sport (school, developing, and senior elite), focusing mainly on professional and emerging-elite rugby, and Olympic sports. During this time, he has supported several National Teams to Olympics (Summer and Winter), Paralympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games.
He has a Master by Research in Sports Science specialising in the collaborative practice between coaches, supports staff, and athletes for achieving peak performance. Further, Jamie has published and presented at conferences on the topic, and coupled with day-to-day practice, has given Jamie a unique understanding and practical knowhow in what is required for effective collaborative practice.
In this session Jamie will explore some of the issues faced by support staff in sport (sport science, sports medicine, strength and condition, nutrition, etc) and provide practical solutions in how to improve cooperation and collaboration for the purposes of delivering repeatable success.
