ESSA Mental Health ASK: Part 2 - The Role of the Exercise Professional as an Accidental Counsellor: Communication Skills and Strategies in Mental Health

This unit will explore communication skills and strategies in mental health. The unit will cover: 
Knowledge and application of communication skills with those with a mental illness or poor mental health including:
        o Reducing stigma
        o Empathy
        o Using appropriate language
        o Identifying and managing events 
        o Compassion fatigue and burnout

Completion of this unit will result in the following learning outcomes: 
Understanding key communication skills and strategies to assist with working with those who are experiencing symptoms of mental illness or poor mental health.

Presented by Dr Oscar Lederman, PhD, AES, AEP

Dr Oscar Lederman is Clinical lead and Accredited Exercise Physiologist at the Keeping the Body in Mind (KBIM) program, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service. Oscar is also a conjoint lecturer and academic at the University of New South Wales, Sydney in the Exercise Physiology Department. Oscar has 7 years experience working within the mental health field.

Oscar regularly provides education and training for students, academics and health professionals regarding the role of exercise and healthy lifestyle for people experiencing mental illness. Oscar is a qualified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor and delivers frequent workshops to students, exercise professionals and members of the public.
