Diabetes Vascular Abnormalities and the Role of Exercise Pod
Diabetes affects 1.7 million Australians and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is indeed the fastest growing chronic disease in Australia. Patients with T2D have an increased risk of organ damage and also show vascular abnormalities compared to non-diabetic individuals. Emerging evidence suggests that such vascular changes may be contributing to accelerated organ decline in patients with T2D. Exercise, however, is beneficial in improving vascular dysfunction and may play a pivotal role in delaying organ damage in this patient group.

This podcast will cover the pathophysiolgy of vascular abnormalities and organ damage in patients with diabetes, as well as the role that exercise plays in improving vascular function. The current recommendations and guidelines for exercise prescription in patients with diabetes will also be discussed.

Presented by Dr Rachel Climie

Dr. Rachel Climie is an accredited Exercise Physiologist and has recently completed her PhD in Medical Research. Her PhD focussed on understanding the relationship between central blood pressure and target organ damage in patients with type 2 diabetes, in particular in response to exercise that mimics the stress of normal daily activity. Rachel has published 9 scientific papers and has been an invited presenter of more than 20 scientific abstracts at both national and international conferences. In 2014 Rachel was awarded the Aspire Academy Young Investigator for Exercise Science and Health and was the recipient of the Exercise and Sports Science Australia and European College of Sports Science Research Exchange Award. Earlier this year, Rachel was invited to represent the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia at Parliament House to discuss her research with the leader of the Australian Greens Party, Richard De Natale, as part of Science Meets Parliament.
