What is pranayama (yoga breathing) and qigong (breathwork from TCM) - historic overview
Current therapeutic evidence base of yoga and qigong for health conditions such as Mental Health (anxiety, depression), LBP, Respiratory (COPD), and metabolic conditions (hypertension, diabetes)
The biomechanics of breathing - ie diaphragm, respiratory muscles, mechanical integration of the spine
The Biochemistry of breathing - Hypoxic - hypercapnic response, oxygenation of tissues, role of nitric oxide and C02. BOLT test
The Psycho-neurology or "state" of breathing - ANS regulation via the prefrontal cortex- diaphragm, HRV, vagus nerve and effect of neuromodulators on state (thoughts, feeling, behaviours)
Pranayama breathing techniques - Box breathing, Kapabilti, alternate nostril breathing
Qigong breathing techniques - 8 Brocades, grand circulation, small circulation, tummo breathing
Integration - how to use pranayama and Qigong in an exercise Physiology program.
Presented by Andrew Dowler BapSCI HM, PG ExRehab, MA Acu
Andrew is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist with ESSA as well as a registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner with AHPRA and has been working in this dual role for over 20 years. He has a particular interest in the integration of Exercise Medicine Programs integrating modern Exercise Sports Science principles with traditional health systems of Yoga and TCM, which include Qigong,taichi, yoga, pranayama and meditation. Andrew is a Yoga and Qigong/teacher teacher and runs a private EP / TCM practice and studio on the South coast of NSW.
