ESSA and Nike Student Think Tank Recording - Episode 1

In this educational series, supported by ESSA and Nike, we will be speaking with experts working in high performance sport about their career pathways and experiences, and the current roles they hold in their respective professions. We will be taking a behind-the-scenes- look at "a day in the life" of working in the elite sport environment, the challenges, rewards, and what it takes to get there. This series is for students, graduates and early career practitioners with aspirations to work in high performance sport, who want to see firsthand what this career involves.

This is a recording of the ESSA and Nike Student Think Tank presented on 13 May 2021. 

Presented by David Betts and Dr Jamie Stanley 

David Betts: David Betts is the Para-Cycling National Head Coach for the Australian Cycling team. Working with multiple Paralympians and World Champions - both Road and Track athletes - across multiple disciplines. David is an accredited Level 3 Cycling Coach and has a trade background in Machine Printing. He was also a professional cyclist with a career racing in Europe for European teams and for the AIS.

Dr Jamie Stanley:
Dr Jamie Stanley is a sports physiologist specialising in performance and recovery optimisation working with current world recording holding, Olympic, Commonwealth, and World champion athletes (able-body and para) of the Australian Cycling Team track program, and South Australian Sports Institute swimming program. Jamie is 2020 ESSA Accredited Applied Sport Scientist of the year, holds an adjunct research position at the University of South Australia, is a member of the Australian Institute of Sport Tokyo Heat Project, and is a contributor for The Science and Application of High-Intensity Interval Training textbook and online course (www.hiitscience.com). He has a special interest in integrating environmental stress into training to enhance adaptations.Formerly Jamie competed at an elite level in triathlon but is now chasing a sub 2 hour 30 minute marathon.
