Therapeutic Exercise for Children With Cmplx Cond Webinar

Therapeutic exercise for children with complex health conditions Webinar

The benefits of physical activity are universal for all children, including those with a complex health condition. Children with complex health conditions are challenged with a variety of barriers that impact their ability to participate in everyday activities, including regular physical activity. Despite the known benefits of physical activity, it can be difficult to engage children and their families in regular physical activity and facilitate life-long positive health behaviours due to persistent physiological limitations, negative psychological sequalae and a lack of accessible and inclusive community programs. There are a wide range of personal, social and environmental factors that influence behaviour, particularly pertaining to health.

This webinar will aim to provide you with an overview on common paediatric complex health conditions, how to approach assessing a child with a complex health condition and review current evidence on therapeutic exercise and behaviour change strategies. Case study examples, including a childhood brain tumour survivor and a child with a diagnosis of spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, will demonstrate how this knowledge can be effectively implemented to foster positive health behaviour changes.

Presented by Brooke Kohler BESS(Hons) MPhty APAM
Brooke is a physiotherapist and PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology, located at the Centre for Children’s Health Research, South Brisbane. Brooke has gained valuable experience across community-based clinical roles offering physiotherapy services for children and adults with disabilities (cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder) within a multi-disciplinary team of exercise physiologists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists. Since completing her physiotherapy qualifications, Brooke has endeavoured to provide high-quality therapy that is holistic, client-centred and emphasises evidence-based therapeutic exercise. Brooke’s PhD aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a goal-directed therapeutic exercise.
