Travel in Elite Sport: Challenges and Solutions Podcast

With the increasing globalisation of elite sport and the money associated with it, athletes’ competition and travel schedules are becoming increasingly congested. For example, data from Fifpro collected on 16 elite soccer players across the 2018-19 season found they played almost 80 matches and travelled over 110,000 km. Due to the unique geographical positioning of Australia, the travel demands faced by elite Australian athletes is also high.

Long-haul travel across multiple time-zones wreaks havoc on multiple processes occurring within the body, which if not appropriately dealt with can seriously derail an athlete’s preparation for and performance in competition.

Not only will this podcast outline the impact that long-haul travel has on the body, but also provide practical, evidence-based solutions for the busy practitioner to implement with their athletes. This includes the judiciously timed use of light, melatonin and exercise to resynchronise the bodies circadian system to the new time-zone, together with strategies to reduce sleep disruption and the risk of illness.

The recording is of a webinar presented by ESSA on 16 December 2019.

Presented by Dr Peter Fowler, PhD, ESSAM, AES, ASpS2

Peter has a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science and MSc in Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University in the UK. He completed his PhD in 2014 through Charles Sturt University in Australia, investigating the effects of international and domestic air travel on team sport performance, sleep and recovery.

Peter has worked in the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, the Department of Physiology at the Australian Institute of Sport and at several football clubs in the Australian A-League.

Peter has also worked as a Research Scientist at Aspetar Sports Medicine Hospital in Qatar, where his research focused on developing practical interventions for athletes to minimise sleep disruption and enhance recovery following travel. He currently has 18 publications in international peer-reviewed sports science/medicine journals, has co-authored a book chapter and has presented at several international sports science/medicine conferences, including the prestigious IOC World Conference on the Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport.

Whilst at Aspetar, Peter was also a sports science consultant to a range of elite athletes, clubs and organisations from the English Premier League, Rugby Sevens World Series, Rugby League, NFL, cycling and motor racing, together with the Qatar Olympic Team and Football Association.

Peter has recently established the Recovery Room, which is a Sports Recovery Centre based on the Sunshine Coast, where he also provides recovery, sleep and travel consultancy services. He is also currently the Member Development Officer for Sports Science at Exercise and Sports Science Australia and a Visiting Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology.
