Identifying and Responding to Mental Health Symptoms

ESSA’s first ASK professional development has been developed to build applied skills and knowledge to work in the field of mental health. This suite of PD is designed to be accessible to all our accreditation streams and external parties, this includes AEPs who may work with those who have mental illness, as well as AES and ASpS who work with those who may be experiencing poor mental health, or those who display some symptoms of mental illness but do not have a diagnosis

ESSA Mental Health ASK: Part 2 - The Role of the Exercise Professional as an Accidental Counsellor: Identifying and Responding to Mental Health Symptoms

This unit will explore identifying and responding to mental health symptoms. The unit will cover 
  • Identifying and responding to mental health signs and symptoms including:
            o Identifying signs and symptoms
            o Common tools used
            o Interpreting tool outcomes
            o Understanding the pathways to get appropriate help

    Completion of this unit will result in the following learning outcome: 
    Recognising signs and symptoms and how to help someone access help or services when this happens

    Presented by Dr Kemi Wright, AES, AEP

    Dr Kemi Wright is the Senior Exercise Physiologist and clinical lead for Fremantle Hospital Mental Health Service. She has been responsible for establishing an exercise servicing pathway for in-patient and outpatient mental health consumers to improve their physical and mental health. Kemi’s research and clinical interests are focused on the role and implementation of exercise for the physiological and/or psychological benefit in special populations including children and youth and mental illness. Kemi is active in professional education space, regularly delivering workshops in Standard Mental Health First Aid and Paediatric Exercise Rehabilitation as part of the Thriving Minds team.

    This unit is suitable for anyone with an interest in being able to recognise signs and symptoms experienced by those with a mental illness or poor mental health and what to do when you encounter them.
