Blood Flow Restriction - Understanding the Basics and the Multiple Applications of its use Podcast

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training has recently had a lot of publicity as a training tool to assist with accelerating gains in strength and hypertrophy whilst only using low loads. Consequently, this is seen as a great tool in the injury rehabilitation setting.  The concept of BFR training originated out of Japan in the 1960’s and was called KAATSU. In Japan, KAATSU training is a well-researched and training methodology with a high level of acceptance in the wider community. However, there still appears to be many misconceptions about its use and safety. Therefore, this podcast will be a summary of the available BFR and KAATSU literature to give you a basic understanding of Blood Flow Restriction.

The podcast will have three main themes. The first section will highlight the basics of BFR, including the mechanisms and principles behind BFR. The second section will discuss contraindications and considerations around BFR use. The last section will highlight how to use and apply BFR across a spectrum of multiple scenarios that include improving recovery, physiology, tendon/joint pain and bone reformation. Due to the wealth of information, this podcast will be an overview and give you an understanding of what can be done with BFR. In addition, this podcast will also highlight interesting and real-world case studies.  Chris brings over 10 years of BFR experience to this presentation and will leave you with an understanding of what BFR can do for your clients and how you could incorporate it into your own practice.

This is a recording of an ESSA webinar presented on 24 June 2020.

Presented by Dr Chris Gavigilo, PhD, BSci(HMS)

Dr. Chris Gaviglio is the current senior strength and conditioning coach for the Queensland Academy of Sport.  Chris has been involved with elite sport for over 20 years working across multiple Olympic sports and professional football codes in both the northern (Bath Rugby) and southern (Wallabies and Gold Coast SUNS AFL) hemisphere.   He is also the Physical Performance manager for the Queensland Maroons Rugby league team.

During his time in the UK (Bath Rugby), Chris was involved with UKSport in multiple applied sports science projects.  His major project involved monitoring salivary hormones (testosterone and cortisol) responses to competition and training in rugby union and culminated in his thesis. Chris has several papers already publish as a result of this work and other collaborative work with other applied sport scientists.

Aside from an interest in using salivary hormones as a marker for training and competition, he continues to provide bespoke applied sports science projects for the athletes he works with, particularly in the areas of:
• Passive heat maintenance
• Blood flow restriction training
• Warm-up and peri-competition strategies
• Power and strength development

Chris is also an entrepreneur and enjoys designing training products that compliments his strength and conditioning passion. This includes the  Sports Rehab Tourniquet to be used for Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training. It is a total body training system for both the upper and lower body. As a progression from designing this BFR training tool he has developed training workshops and instructional videos to help educate users.
