Managing Pain, and Women's Health in the Clinic Sydney Workshop

This PDO opportunity will cover two topics:
1. Contemporary exercise considerations for managing pain, and
2. Exercise in women’s health and female athletes.

Whether it's the female triad, pre and post natal, or exercising through peri-menopause or menopause, exercise has a role in women’s health.

Chronic pain is prevalent, disabling, and costly. Back pain and knee pain contribute most to this burden. Pain is arguably the number one complaint that is dealt with in the clinic.

This workshop will combine research, and clinical case studies with a networking event looking at how to deal with womens health, and pain. No matter who the client is, this workshop should be relevant to your practice.

Presented by Noella Green, B.Sp.Ex.Sci & GDip. Ex.Phys, AEP, ESSAM, Matthew Jones, BExPhys, MSc, PhD, AEP, ESSAM and Kirsty Stone, B.App.Sc, AES, AEP, ESSAM

Noella Green: "After studying Sports and Exercise Science, and Exercise Physiology at JCU in Townsville, I moved to Sydney to chase new clinical opportunities. I started treating in workers compensation and completed the career loop into injury management and prevention. During this time I also played representative rugby where I met the man who’s been my significant other for 10+ years. We started talking about having a baby in 2018 and this triggered the self-review of the hormonal contraceptive I had been taking since I was 14yro due to an abnormal menstrual cycle. I  stopped taking the pill and within 3 month started experiencing the same symptoms I did when I was 14yro. It was at this point, I said this is not right and started the self-research, self development which has led me to creating a female athlete health and wellbeing program at Sydney University, educating young female athletes and coaches about female health and wellbeing. I worked with wonderful Researchers here is Australia to guide my pregnancy and postpartum return to sports, and maintain close contact with them to continue growing my knowledge, skills and application when working with other female athletes. I am also part of the industry reference group with the AIS for the FPHI.
If I can help another female improve their confidence by understanding their body better, their menstrual cycle and participation in physical activity – it’s a win for me, for them, their family and their community."

Dr Matthew Jones is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at UNSW Sydney. His research investigates the role of exercise for the management of chronic pain (mainly low back pain and knee osteoarthritis) and chronic fatigue, two closely related sensations which, when persistent, can have debilitating effects on health and quality of life. His research also aims to improve the way Exercise Physiologists manage people with chronic pain and chronic fatigue by first seeking to understand current practices, and then developing and evaluating interventions to better align current practice with clinical guidelines.

Kristy Stone: "I completed a Batchelor of Applied Science, Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Sydney and have since been a practicing Accredited Exercise Physiologist with 18 years experience working in the management of chronic pain. I am the Senior Exercise Physiologist at Workplace Physiotherapy developing knowledge and application of exercise centered strategies and techniques within a unique team of pain specialty health professionals. I have extensive experience working with individuals and groups within workers compensation, DVA, disability and private sectors. I welcome the challenge of complex case injury management and facilitating unexpected gains."
