Practical Ethics for High Performance Managers Webinar

This is part of a two-part series for High Performance Managers.
Sport Integrity for High Performance Managers Webinar - Wednesday, 5 July 2023
Practical Ethics for High Performance Managers Webinar - Wednesday, 19 July 2023

Ethics can be thought of generally as ‘doing the right thing’ by others. In the context of sport, high performance managers can face ethical issues in their relationship with athletes, sport scientists and other support personnel, as well as with coaches and sport club/institute managers. ‘Doing the right thing’ can then mean upholding productive and healthy workplace relationships, as well as supporting the alignment of professional practice to legislation, professional codes of conduct, and organisational values and culture.

To support this management and leadership role, this webinar will focus on the development of critical-reflective and ethical reasoning skills. In short, it will involve understanding and using an ethics ‘toolkit’ for practical decision making and problem solving. The ‘toolkit’ includes the following five ethical approaches and related principles:
Rights (respect for autonomy, duty of care, beneficence, non-maleficence)
Utilitarian (benefits and harms for all stakeholders; greatest good for greatest number)
Justice/Fairness (merit, equality, inclusion, equity)
Common Good (foundation conditions for good life or best practice)
Virtue (valued and relevant character traits)
Practical cases will be used to exemplify each approach, and Q&A opportunities will be made available during and at the end of the session. Participants will be asked to complete a pre-webinar workbook (Practical Ethics for High Performance Managers), which will form the basis of discussion and revision during the webinar.

Presented by Dennis Hemphill
Dennis Hemphill is an ethics and integrity educator working to support the development of safe, fair, and respectful relationships and practices in Australian sport. Dennis has extensive teaching, research and professional/industry experience in sport, clinical exercise and rehabilitation, sport science and research, physical education, coaching and sport management. He is known for a client-centred and case-based approach to learning that focusses on real-world issues and practical problem-solving.

Dennis currently delivers professional ethics workshops for Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA), the Victoria University (VU) Master of Clinical Exercise Science and Rehabilitation program, and for the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership. He continues to publish articles, the latest being a book chapter ‘COVID-19, sport and ethics: the case of the Australian Open 2021’ (in Philosophy, Sport, and the Pandemic, 2021).
As a former Principal Research Fellow at La Trobe University’s Centre for Sport and Social Impact, Dennis was a content developer for a DFAT funded Sport Diplomacy online training course (2022). Prior to that, Dennis developed and facilitated an ‘Ethical Leadership in Coaching’ workshop as part of the Australian Football League Level 4 Coach Accreditation Program (2019). Dennis also developed in 2017 the online training module ‘Walking the Talk: Putting Integrity into Action’ for the Australian Sport Commission (Play by the Rules).
Dennis was involved in a Commonwealth-funded two Sport and Recreation Victoria funded projects, the results of which informed the Victorian Integrity in Sport Action Plan 2017-18. The first project examined the sport integrity capability of state and community sport organisations, which was followed by the development of the Sport Integrity Readiness Kit. Prior to that, Dennis was a co-researcher in the Commonwealth-funded anti-doping project ‘Educating the Sportsnet: Understanding the Anti-Doping Knowledge, Beliefs and Attitudes of Support Personnel in Sport’.

In addition to his academic role, Dennis has served as Head of School of Sport and Exercise Science at VU, participated in the ESSA Sport Scientist Accreditation Working Party, and served as Chair of the ESSA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.
