Paediatric Oncology and Exercise Podcast

Advances in childhood cancer treatment and supportive care have contributed to increasing survival rates among childhood cancer survivors (CCS), with over 80% becoming five-year survivors. However, late-effects of treatment are common, with three-quarters of survivors experiencing a chronic illness during survivorship. The most common chronic health conditions experienced by CCS are cardiovascular disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome and secondary cancers. Childhood cancer survivors have also been shown to have reduced cardiovascular fitness compared with age-matched healthy controls, as well as low levels of physical activity. This podcast will cover background information on the prevalence and considerations for childhood cancer and its associated treatments and complications. It will outline relevant considerations for exercise physiologists including a review of current evidence, overview of clinical research and case studies.

The recording is of a webinar presented by ESSA on 19 December 2018.

Presented by Mr David Mizrahi, MSc, BExPhys, AEP, ESSAM

David Mizrahi is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and PhD Candidate at the University of New South Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospital. His research focuses on physical activity and physical fitness after treatment for childhood cancer as well as exercise during chemotherapy for relapsed ovarian cancer. His PhD is also assessing the acceptability of receiving an exercise physiology consultation among parents and survivors of childhood cancer. His work identifies which survivors are at increased risk of having low fitness and physical activity levels, to identify them early and promote behaviour change to minimise health risks in the clinic. He has presented his research locally and internationally, and has 6 publications. He has ongoing collaborations between clinicians and researchers in Australia and abroad to strengthen the link between institutions to advance the understanding of the field and develop the role of exercise for survivors of childhood cancer.
