Rehabilitation for People with Multiple Sclerosis Webinar

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system that leads to widespread demyelination of the axons, with symptom onset typically between the ages of 20 and 50 years, but it can become manifest at any age. Signs and symptoms associated with MS are highly variable between people as well as within an individual during the course of the disease. These signs and symptoms include, but are not limited to, muscle weakness and joint contractures, altered sensory functions, impaired cognition, bladder dysfunction, and fatigue. Consequently, daily life functions of people with MS are profoundly affected such as impaired mobility and balance, frequent falls, low level of physical activity and participation (e.g. loss of employment, reduced social participation).

Yet there is strong evidence indicating that exercise can be a beneficial rehabilitation strategy for people with MS. In fact, regular practice of physical exercise has been shown to help manage symptoms, restore function, optimise quality of life, promote wellness, and boost participation in activities of daily living in people with MS. In addition, there is preliminary evidence suggesting that exercise may influence several neurotrophic factors known to be involved in neuroprotective processes, and potentially slow progression of MS.

The aim of this presentation is to provide practitioners with evidence-based recommendations for the prescription of safe, effective exercise interventions for adults with MS with mild to moderate disability. In addition, the presenter, who has been providing advice on rehabilitation strategies for people with MS at different stages of the disease in the past 21 years, will share his clinical observations while working with people with MS.
