ESSA Reconciliation Action Plan 2019-2020

Underpinning the current Exercise & Sports Science Australia’s (ESSA) 2017-2020 strategic plan are the principles of sustainability and responsibility. Through these principles, ESSA has embarked on a reconciliation journey with Australia’s first peoples by establishing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). RAPs provide a framework for organisations to realise their vision for reconciliation. There are four RAP frameworks provided by Reconciliation Australia: Reflect, Innovate, Stretch and Elevate.

In consultation with Reconciliation Australia, ESSA has developed a Reflect RAP. This is for organisations just starting out on their reconciliation journey and who need to build the foundations for relationships, respect and opportunities. ESSA’s Reflect RAP will give us the time and opportunity as an organisation to raise awareness and support for the RAP among ESSA stakeholders, including staff, Board, committees, members, other organisations, government and the general public. It will also assist ESSA to develop a solid RAP governance model and build the business case for future commitments to cultural learning, and practicing cultural protocols that consider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment, with long term vision for progressing to RAP Innovate, Stretch and Elevate frameworks.

Through its RAP, ESSA aims to engage in meaningful dialogue with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and address some of the inequities that exist between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-indigenous Australians.
