AEP Case Conference: Return to Running Postpartum

The reality of returning to running postpartum, is clinicians will work with clients that had a c-section or vaginal delivery. Using the same return to running research and protocols outlined by Goom, Donnelly and Brockwell (March 2019) and Donnelly et al (2021), this case conference will discuss 2 case studies side by side to help clinicians understand the different stages of returning to running.

The session will review and help clinicians navigate key pre-screening considerations for the postpartum mother when returning to running. Each client will have a different physical activity background that must be assessed to make sure, the first step in returning to running is appropriate. We will discuss a simple returning to running graduated program with progressions and regressions, and identifying when a referral may be needed to assess other health related concerns that may arise.

This can be a daunting process for mothers because at this point in time, a mother’s priority is not herself – it’s her newborn baby. A clinician’s role is to understand and acknowledge this innate behaviour, and equally guide and help mothers in the first steps to moving for physical and mental health that all their loved ones benefit.
