Evaluating Practice and Integrating Exercise Professionals

ESSA’s first ASK professional development has been developed to build applied skills and knowledge to work in the field of mental health. This suite of PD is designed to be accessible to all our accreditation streams and external parties, this includes AEPs who may work with those who have mental illness, as well as AES and ASpS who work with those who may be experiencing poor mental health, or those who display some symptoms of mental illness but do not have a diagnosis.

ESSA Mental Health ASK: Part 3 - The Lived Experience and Evaluating Practice: Evaluating Practice and Integrating exercise professionals into Mental Health Care 

This unit will explore common healthcare evaluation frameworks, how this can be applied within mental health settings, as well as introduce the basic concepts of economic evaluation and using economic analysis to determine cost-effectiveness of your service. This unit will also explore strategies for advocating for and integrating exercise professionals within mental health settings.

The unit will cover:
Health care and economic evaluation and design.
Measuring quality in health service provision.
Designing health care evaluations in mental health settings.
Strategies in promoting good integration of exercise professionals within mental health settings.
Examples of research translation into clinical practice and quality improvement projects. 

Completion of this unit will result in the following learning outcomes: 
An understanding of the basic principles of health service evaluation and design.
Knowledge of common quality indicators in health care evaluation.
The ability to analyse different frameworks of health service evaluation and how these can be used to evaluate exercise-based interventions in mental health settings.
An understanding of the basic principles of economic evaluation and how these can be applied to exercise-based interventions.
Strategies for promoting good integration of exercise professionals within mental health settings.
Application of this knowledge into real world examples

Presented by Lisa Simmons, AEP and Dr Oscar Lederman, AEP

Lisa Simmons: Lisa is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist with over 15 years’ experience working in the areas of musculoskeletal rehabilitation, cardiovascular rehabilitation, occupational and vocational rehabilitation, mental health, substance abuse and clinical education. Lisa also completed a Masters in Health and Human Services Management through Deakin University in 2015 and has a keen interest in public health, health promotion, health economics and health service management.
Lisa is the Course Coordinator for the Clinical Exercise Physiology program at James Cook University (JCU) and the Clinic Lead of the JCU Exercise Physiology Clinic and has been successful in the development of key research and placement relationships with surrounding hospitals. These collaborations have led to the successful development of student-led services designed to promote the benefits of exercise interventions in cancer treatment, exercise as an effective therapy in mental health and the importance of exercise in end stage kidney disease. Lisa is currently completing her PHD on evaluating student-led healthcare services.

Oscar Lederman: Dr Oscar Lederman is Clinical lead and Accredited Exercise Physiologist at the Keeping the Body in Mind (KBIM) program, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service. Oscar is also a conjoint lecturer and academic at the University of New South Wales, Sydney in the Exercise Physiology Department. Oscar has 7 years experience working within the mental health field.
Oscar regularly provides education and training for students, academics and health professionals regarding the role of exercise and healthy lifestyle for people experiencing mental illness. Oscar is a qualified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor and delivers frequent workshops to students, exercise professionals and members of the public.
