ESSA’s first ASK professional development has been developed to build applied skills and knowledge to work in the field of mental health. This suite of PD is designed to be accessible to all our accreditation streams and external parties, this includes AEPs who may work with those who have mental illness, as well as AES and ASpS who work with those who may be experiencing poor mental health, or those who display some symptoms of mental illness but do not have a diagnosis
ESSA Mental Health ASK: Part 1 - Exploring Diagnoses: Psychosis, Bipolar and Personality Disorders
This unit will explore Psychosis, Bipolar and Personality Disorders. The unit will cover:
• Symptoms and presentations
• Co-morbidities occurring with the diagnoses
• Evidence-based exercise recommendations
• Specific considerations for exercise prescription within diagnoses
• Treatment options and the impact on consumers
Completion of this unit will result in the following learning outcomes:
• Understanding of different mental illness diagnoses and their co-morbidities
• Knowledge of the evidence around exercise prescription
• Knowledge of the treatment options available and how treatments may impact on your client/consumer/athlete

Presented by Dr Oscar Lederman, PhD, AES, AEP
Dr Oscar Lederman is Clinical lead and Accredited Exercise Physiologist at the Keeping the Body in Mind (KBIM) program, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service. Oscar is also a conjoint lecturer and academic at the University of New South Wales, Sydney in the Exercise Physiology Department. Oscar has 7 years experience working within the mental health field.
Oscar regularly provides education and training for students, academics and health professionals regarding the role of exercise and healthy lifestyle for people experiencing mental illness. Oscar is a qualified Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor and delivers frequent workshops to students, exercise professionals and members of the public.
