Media Statement: ESSA Congratulates Newest Fellowships

ESSA Fellowship is available to Full members of ESSA and recognises those who have achieved a high level of professional accomplishment, responsibility and service to ESSA.

“The awarding of an ESSA Fellowship allows us to recognise a long-standing member that has made a significant impact on the industry and has continued to provide their support and dedication to the association,” says ESSA Chief Executive Officer, Anita Hobson-Powell.

ESSA wishes to congratulate the following three members on this achievement, and thank them for their contributions to ESSA and the industry so far.

  • Dr Jay Ebert
  • Associate Professor Michael Baker
  • Associate Professor Steve Fraser

Dr Jay Ebert
has been an ESSA member since 2002. Jay’s contributions to the industry span across research and clinical, and has been instrumental in elevating the standing of AEPs in the orthopedic sector. Jay’s contributions to the organisation also includes serving as a committee member on the WA State Chapter and the Professional Development Review Committee, as well presenting for a range of ESSA conferences and professional development roadshows.

Previously recognised for a range of awards, including the 2010 AEP of the Year and the 2008 ESSA Medal, Jay was notably awarded an Honorary Fellowship with the Australian Orthopaedic Association for his research and clinical application to improving patient outcome in the orthopaedic patients – the first exercise physiologist to be awarded this recognition.

Associate Professor Michael Baker has been an ESSA member since 2007. Transitioning seamlessly from practitioner to researcher to teacher, Michael has continued to be a custodian of the exercise and sports science industry, and has devoted his time over many years to the profession.

Michael has served on a range of ESSA councils and committees, including being the current chair of the Accreditation Council and the inaugural chair of the Exercise Science Advisory Group, to name only a few. The leadership roles that Michael has taken on within ESSA have been pivotal in the evolution of the professional standards and the accreditation system, two of the most fundamental functions of the organisation.

Associate Professor Steve Fraser has been an ESSA member since 2007. Steve has taught over 5,000 students across 20 years, providing the highest quality of education to the next generation of professionals. With recognition as a national and emerging international authority, Steve has devoted his working life to the development and promotion of exercise for health, sporting and social benefit.

Outside of his service to ESSA through the university, Steve also serves on the Accreditation Council, contributing to the ESSA professional standards, and liaises between ESSA and the Council of Heads of Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences (CHESM), of which he is the current Vice-President.

“All three recipients are high-regarded professionals that have made significant contributions to the organisation. They join a growing list of Fellows guiding our industry forward,” adds Anita.

ESSA Fellowship applications are accepted bi-annually on 30th June and 1st December each year. ESSA members will be reminded later in 2019 of this opportunity should they wish to apply.
