Canadian accreditation recognition now available for ESSA professionals

In 2018, Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) announced the signing of an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at broadening opportunities for our respective members through research exchange, networking and professional development.

In light of this MOU, ESSA is pleased to announce that Accredited Exercise Scientists and Accredited Exercise Physiologists who are wishing to travel to Canada to work within the industry now have a simplified pathway to apply for ‘Equivalency Recognition’ with CSEP to become certified members.

“The sport and exercise science industry in Canada has strong foundations in health, wellness and exercise physiology and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) is the professional body Australians should turn to,” says Ms. Anita Hobson-Powell, ESSA Chief Executive Officer.

“This equivalency recognition provides ESSA accredited professionals with the opportunity to continue their work overseas in Canada and strengthen the field of exercise science and exercise physiology internationally.”

The equivalencies recognised by CSEP are:
  • ESSA Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) as equivalent to the CSEP-Certified Personal Trainer™ (CSEP-CPT) with the CSEP High Performance Specialisation™
  • ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) as equivalent to the CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist™ (CSEP-CEP) with the CSEP High Performance Specialisation™

An online form has been created and is available on the CSEP website which streamlines the application process for good-standing ESSA accredited professionals. This pathway bypasses the standard certification requirements of completing a theory and practical exam to become a CSEP certified member.

"CSEP is excited to see how much interest this recognition has generated from our colleagues in Australia. We look forward to welcoming ESSA's outstanding members into the CSEP community and further strengthening the field of exercise physiology around the world," says CSEP's Chair, Adam Upshaw, PhD.
