Statement: Exercise support services through telehealth an excellent option to keep Aussies safe and active

Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) has commended the Federal Government for its swift action in approving Medicare services through telehealth.

“Keeping our community active and healthy through these difficult times is important. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) provide an essential service for many people living with a chronic condition,” says Anita Hobson-Powell, ESSA’s Chief Executive Officer.

“Accredited Exercise Physiologists have both the expertise and the capacity to support the government’s efforts to contain COVID-19 through remote services like telehealth, and it is imperative that they are financially supported as they continue caring for the physical health and well-being of Australians, especially those with chronic disease who are at greater risk from COVID-19.”

This move will enable the continuation of the safe delivery of health services to people with chronic disease by AEPs, support the primary healthcare system in managing COVID-19, and mitigate the spread of the virus to vulnerable populations.

“These measures will enable AEPs to continue to support the physical health and well-being of Australians throughout the lifecycle of the pandemic.”

Accredited Exercise Physiologists throughout the country are being as agile and responsive as they can and developing processes to deliver telehealth services. Their commitment to their clients and the community remains unwavering.
