ESSA Congratulates Latest Fellow

4 March 2022

Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) wishes to congratulate Professor Daniel Galvão (Edith Cowan University) who has been successfully accepted as an ESSA Fellow.

“The awarding of an ESSA Fellowship allows us to recognise a long-standing member that has made a significant impact on the industry and has continued to provide their support and dedication to the association,” says ESSA Chief Executive Officer, Anita Hobson-Powell.

Professor Galvão received glowing references from the reviewers of his fellowship application:

“There is clear evidence that Professor Galvão has advanced the area of exercise science generally, but specifically the need for exercise intervention in cancer. He has done this through exceptional and collaborative research work which is published in high impact quality journals. As such, he has advanced the ideals of ESSA and promoted its growth and relevance to the community and health care practice. Professor Galvão has also shown that the research conducted can be translated to benefit the community of cancer survivors.”

“It is challenging to succinctly summarise the critical and progressive impact that Professor Galvão’s work has had for 19 years across translational research, industry standards and health practice on an international scale. The provided (53 page!) CV was incredibly enjoyable to read (never thought I’d say that about a CV of any kind) and it was inspiring to understand the scope of what the applicant has done across his career, particularly after first reading the referee statements from his two colleagues at ECU, both also highly regarded researchers and leaders in exercise oncology, nationally and internationally.”

“Professor Galvão is a highly-regarded professional and researcher – with a specific focus on cancer. He has co-authored the two ESSA position statements in Exercise and Cancer (2009, 2019) and the two ACSM consensus statement on Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors (2010, 2019).,” adds Anita.

ESSA Fellowship is available to Full and Academic members of ESSA and recognises those who have achieved a high level of professional accomplishment, responsibility and service to ESSA. ESSA Fellowship applications are accepted bi-annually on 30th June and 1st December each year.
