In high-performance sport, the greatest challenge is rarely knowing what to do—it is doing the right things consistently over time. Many athletes and teams struggle with fluctuating training quality, inconsistent behaviours under pressure, and difficulty sustaining performance across long seasons. This session addresses that gap by unpacking the science of consistency and how habits underpin durable, repeatable performance outcomes. Drawing on contemporary research from psychology, neuroscience, and high-performance sport, this session explores how habits are formed, reinforced, and disrupted, and why consistency is a stronger predictor of success than motivation or short-term intensity. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how stress, fatigue, environment, and context influence behaviour, and how these factors can either support or derail performance habits. The session will translate evidence into practical, field-ready strategies for coaches, practitioners, and performance staff. Participants can expect applied frameworks for building effective habits, tools for aligning daily behaviours with performance goals, and strategies to support athletes through disruption, injury, pressure, and performance slumps. The focus throughout is on practical application—helping professionals design systems and environments that make consistency easier, more robust, and more sustainable. For ESSA members, this session supports professional growth by strengthening the ability to influence behaviour change, enhance athlete adherence, and integrate habit-based approaches into training, rehabilitation, and performance programs. Participants will leave with actionable insights they can immediately apply in their practice to drive reliable, long-term performance gains.
