Painful Clients – Working with Chronic Pain

AFL LOGOAFL LOGO

With chronic pain affecting 1 in 5 Australians, exercise specialists are well placed to play a pivotal role in both the prevention & management of chronic pain.

This workshop provides exercise specialists with a better understanding of pain, the development of chronic pain, and how this affects a person physically, socially and psychologically. A bio-psycho-social approach is essential in the treatment and management of chronic pain.

The very nature of the Pilates Method, including its concepts, principles and repertoire, make it an ideal movement modality, for the management of this condition. The practical nature of this workshop will allow you to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the Pilates Method, which will be invaluable when working with this clinical population.

This information can then be passed onto clients, enabling them to have a better understanding of their own condition, which is vital for self-management.

Presented by Kath Banks:

With a combined expertise in both the Pilates Method and exercise physiology, Kath is well placed to provide ESSA members with an increased understanding of the Pilates Method and its application to clinical populations. Exercise prescription for musculoskeletal conditions is a major focus of her current work in both the Pilates studio and as a Pilates educator.

Kath graduated over 20 years ago with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) with a 1st class honors and a publication in the Journal of Applied Physiology. She has been working in the industry since that time, specialising in the Pilates Method 12 years ago.

Kath holds an Advanced Diploma of the Pilates Method, owns Aligned for Life Pilates – Moonee Ponds and has been a faculty educator for National Pilates Training for the last 10 years, teaching the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of the Pilates Method, as well as presenting continuing education workshops. Kath has also been a Pilates’ consultant for the Maribyrnong Sports Academy and will have completed her Masters in Clinical Exercise Science & Rehabilitation by early 2017.
