Pilates for Osteoporosis – Minimising the risk of fracture

AFL LOGOAFL LOGO

With 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over 50yrs, experiencing an osteoporotic fracture, it is vital exercise specialists increase their knowledge of this disease, together with appropriate exercise prescription.

This workshop explores the development and diagnosis of osteoporosis, as well as how exercise can have a positive effect on our bone health & fracture risk management. Programming strategies focus on minimising fracture risk, through the application & understanding of indicated and contraindicated movements & exercise prescription.

The Pilates method, together with its concepts, principles & repertoire provide an ideal movement modality for this disease, as long as appropriate modifications & exclusions are applied.

This workshop is very practical in nature, providing the participant with a full movement experience to ensure an in-depth understanding of each exercise & its execution. These exercises can then be applied to osteoporotic, elderly & falls risk clients, in either a private or group setting

Learning Outcomes

  • Increased knowledge of osteoporosis & osteopenia, including pathophysiology and epidemiology, bone remodeling and risk factors of the disease
  • Increased knowledge of the diagnosis including DXA scores
  • Increased knowledge of bone fracture risk management & falls prevention
  • Increased knowledge of indicated & contraindicated movement patterns
