Battle of the sexes: differences in adaptation mechanisms between male and females

Both male and female athletes train and compete in high performance sporting environments every day across Australia. Some athletes train alone, some train with partners or squads of mixed gender and some athletes train in sex-specific national training centres. Regardless of where our male and female athletes train, the majority of athletes are supported by professionals such as coaches, sports scientists and strength and conditioning coaches who work together to optimize the adaptations to training and achieve the best possible competitive outcome. As males and females differ in their underlying physiology, it is no surprise that some key considerations need to be addressed when planning training sessions and seasons. This ESSA webinar investigates the sex-specific factors to be considered when aiming to optimize the adaptations to different types of training. Additionally, two case studies and the results from a coach and scientist knowledge survey will be discussed.

Presented by Dr Kirstin Morris, BSptExSci(Hons 1), PhD, ESSAM, AES, ASpS2
Dr Kirstin Morris has worked as a physiologist in the Performance Science Unit at the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) since 2013. After graduating from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Hons 1) in 2012. Kirstin went on to complete her PhD in the field of Swimming Energetics embedded with the QAS Swimming Program, with the support of Swimming Australia and The University of Queensland. During her time with the Swimming Program, Kirstin has gained valuable and extensive experience working along-side a number of Australia’s best swimming coaches and support staff in the daily training environment, at competitions (State, National and Internationals), and on numerous training camps. Recently, Kirstin was appointed as the Performance Scientist for the QAS Rowing and Athletics program and is passionately striving to provide innovative and evidence-based sports science servicing to elite athletes and coaches to foster the improvement of athletic performance.
