Considerations of the Female Athlete Podcast

It is remarkable that the (mis)use of testosterone attracts vast attention, whereas knowing the effects of female sex hormones (both natural and synthetic) is considered less important. A lack of knowledge regarding the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraception, and pregnancy may result in premature decisions being made about training and recovery interventions in elite female athletes. This professional development explores female-specific physiology relevant for the female athletes and in particular examines the potential effects of the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraception, and pregnancy on performance, injury, and illness.

The recording is of a webinar presented by ESSA on 12 April 2019.

Presented by A/Prof Clare Minahan, PhD, AES, ASpS2, ASCA2

Associate Professor Minahan’s research interests are in the advancement of human performance via exercise training, as well as dietary and environmental interventions. A key focus of Associate Professor Minahan’s is the unique and distinct response of the “female” athlete to exercise and training. Her research offers better solutions to female athletes that meet their requirements for elite performance and often unarticulated gender-specific needs. The outcomes of Associate Professor Minahan’s research provide the impetus for significant positive change adopted by coaches, female athletes, and gender-comparative researchers.
