Exercise for Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia and Falls Webinar

Exercise is widely recommended to prevent osteoporosis and reduce the risk of falls and fractures, but not all forms are equally effective. This professional development webinar will provide an update falls and fracture risk assessment and the latest evidence on the role of exercise for preventing and managing osteoporosis, sarcopenia, falls and fractures. Specifically, it will address: 1) how to assess falls and fracture risk; 2) the optimal exercise prescription to improve bone health and reduce fracture risk; and 3) what’s new in terms of exercise for improving functional capacity and preventing falls in the elderly. With sarcopenia now recognised as a distinct muscle disease entity in Australia with an International Classifications of Disease (ICD)-10-AM code, there will also be a discussion on how this disease can be diagnosed. Finally, this webinar will discuss safety considerations for prescribing exercise for high risk individuals with osteoporosis, falls and frailty. 

Presented by Professor Robin Daly, PhD,FASMF, B.App.Sci(HM)Hons
Professor Robin Daly holds the position of Chair in Exercise and Ageing within the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University. His research focuses on understanding how exercise and nutritional approaches can prevent and manage chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia (muscle loss), type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and cognitive related disorders. His also has a special interest in the use of health technology as an approach to remotely deliver evidence-based exercise programs, and the translation of research into practice. He has contributed to national and international clinical guidelines in the area of exercise, calcium, vitamin D and protein for osteoporosis and sarcopenia. A key focus of his work is to ensure that all health professionals recognise the importance of both exercise and nutrition for optimising health outcomes during ageing, and to ensure that they prescribe best-practice, evidence-based programs and approaches that will have a positive impact on health and well-being. He is currently President of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSSFR), council member of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS) and a Fellow of Sports Medicine Australia.
