The importance of physical activity and its promotion for all children and youth is well documented and indisputable. However, children and youth with disabilities participate in significantly less physical activity than their typically developing peers, and have been reported to spend 76-99% of their time awake in sedentary activity. This presentation will share new evidence of effective strategies and intervention approaches that address physical activity participation outcomes, provide validated assessments to support intervention planning, and demonstrate how exercise professionals can design and deliver interventions that promote and sustain participation in exercise and physical activity for children and youth with disabilities.

Dr Claire Willis is an accredited exercise physiologist with a clinical and research focus on the role of exercise and physical activity in the rehabilitative pathways of children and youth with disabilities. Dr Willis is the postdoctoral research fellow managing an NHMRC Partnership Project investigating the effectiveness and health economics of community-based exercise interventions for youth with disabilities. Dr Willis has worked clinically at hospitals and rehabilitation centres around the world, coordinating services providing exercise rehabilitation and physical activity programs for children with complex neurodevelopmental disability.
