Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are frequently complicated by damage to the nervous system. The most common neurological complication in both of these diseases is a distal symmetric sensorimotor polyneuropathy known as peripheral neuropathy. This condition affects more than half of diabetic and CKD patients causing substantial symptom burden with pain, dysesthesia and loss of sensation. Additionally, peripheral neuropathy has been associated with functional impairments including weakness, abnormalities of gait, a greater likelihood of falls and fall related injury as well as difficulty in activities of daily living. Though there is limited specific evidence, tailored exercise programs are likely to benefit this patient cohort through both indirect and direct mechanisms.

Dr Ria Arnold is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist who holds an NHMRC Postdoctoral Fellowship and Lectureship at the School of Medical Sciences UNSW Sydney. Her research examines the neurological complications that occur in diabetes and chronic kidney disease with a focus on reducing patient morbidity and improving quality of life. This work has examined biomarkers of early nerve dysfunction in metabolic neuropathies, the relationship between neuropathy, physical function and quality of life as well as exploration of potential treatments. Her work has produced over 20 peer reviewed publications and attracted competitive grant funding. In addition to research, Dr Arnold is a course convenor of the Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Course in the Exercise Physiology Program at UNSW. She has ongoing collaborations within the departments of Neurology, Nephrology and Endocrinology at the Prince of Wales Hospital and aims to utilise her role in Exercise Physiology at UNSW to strengthen links between these departments.
