Thermal Stress During Team-sport Prep and Comp Webinar
Team-sport competition requires a combination of tactical, technical, physiological and psychological factors for performance. The movement demands of team-sport are random in nature and vary between sports. Nonetheless, team-sports are generally characterised by explosive multi-directional accelerations and decelerations, jumping, high-speed running and maximal sprinting, interspersed with lower intensity running/jogging and walking. While the effect of hot environments on aerobic performance is well understood. Less is known regarding the effect of hot environments on sprint and intermittent running performance, particularly during preparation for team-sport competition. This presentation will explore the existing literature surrounding heat exposure and exercise and provide further information to potentially mitigate the detrimental effect of hot environments on exercise performance.

Presented by Mr Fergus O'Connor
Fergus is completing his PhD in environmental physiology, investigating the thermal challenges faced by team-sport athletes during preparation for competition. Further, He is developing research track record with seven peer-reviewed journal publications to date. In conjunction with completing his PhD Fergus had previously been working full-time in elite sport as a Performance Scientist for the Gold Coast SUNS Football Club. Prior to working at the SUNS, He was also employed at the Western Bulldogs Football Club as a Sports Scientist. Together he have over six years’ experience in applied elite sport settings. The driving force behind his interest in sports science is the application of the physiological underpinnings of exercise to real-world settings.
