Neurophysiological Research in the Treatment and Rehab Pod

This facilitated webinar presented by Dr Ashlee Hendy will explore the applications of cross-education in treatment and rehabilitation of unilateral musculoskeletal injury. Dr Hendy will present a summary of evidence-based knowledge surrounding the effects of injury and immobilisation on the nervous system, focusing on data obtained from functional imaging and brain stimulation techniques such as fMRI and TMS.

A comprehensive analysis of exercise programming principles for resistance exercise to promote the cross-education of strength will be presented. Considerations for exercise selection, training volume, frequency, intensity, contraction type, contraction speed and rest periods will be explored. Recent scientific findings surrounding interhemispheric, cortical, spinal and peripheral neural adaptations induced by various approaches to cross-education training programs will also be investigated.

Finally, current evidence and future directions for the application of cross-education as a supplementary injury recovery technique, as well as in other neuro-rehabilitation settings, will be examined. This will include considerations for functional asymmetry, differences in upper and lower limb rehabilitation models, and limb dominance.

Presented by Dr Ashlee Hendy

Dr Hendy is a Lecture in Motor Learning and Development at Deakin University, and has been actively engaged in Exercise Science and Neurophysiology research since 2010. She was awarded her PhD, entitled ‘Functional and Neurological Adaptations to Transcranial Stimulation during Strength Training’ in 2015. Dr Hendy has been invited to present her work at two International Neuroscience conferences, as well as six Australian Sport and Rehabilitation conferences. She has published 8 peer reviewed publications and has been awarded >$60,000 in funding to support her research in exercise neurophysiology and brain stimulation.
