This presentation will review current literature around compassion fatigue, discuss evidence-based practice and the impact compassion fatigue could have on ESSA professionals (AES, AEP, ASps) in a number of settings.

Mr Martin Bending is the chair for the Exercise Physiology Advisory Group for ESSA. In Martin’s clinical role he works within the disability and aged care sector and has been influential in assisting ESSA in advocating for health reforms and changes including the NDIS.
Mr Oscar Lederman is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) at the Prince of Wales Hospital, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and a PhD Candidate at the University of New South Wales. Oscar coordinates and supervises the Exercise Physiology program at Eastern Suburbs Mental Health (inpatient units and community services), which includes both clinical and consultancy roles. Oscar has extensive experience providing clinical exercise physiology interventions for young people with emerging mental disorders e.g. depression, anxiety and psychosis.
Mr Jonathan Gaston is a clinical psychologist who has previously worked in both public health and University settings and co-founded the Sydney Anxiety Disorders Practice in 1998. From 1999 to 2010 Jonathan held the position of Clinic Director at the Macquarie University Centre for Emotional Health, where his work involved the design and evaluation of group treatment programs for adult anxiety disorders. He also helped establish the Anxiety Practitioners’ Network in 2001, a non-profit association dedicated to the advancement of the treatment of anxiety disorders. Jonathan’s interest in burnout began with his first clinical role at the UNSW Student Counselling Service. This interest continues today in his role as a private practitioner at Aberfoyle Psychology in Marrickville.
Ms Deb Fellowes is the owner of Gold Coast Exercise Physiology. Deb specialises in chronic pain and hydrotherapy and has been working in this field for 20 years. She works with multidisciplinary pain programs in the private and public sector, and provides services to WorkCover Qld and NSW, job networks, private insurers, Medicare and Department of Veteran Affairs. Deb also has working partnerships with both Griffith and Bond Universities.
Currently Deb is interested in the impact and outcomes of trans-cranial stimulation when treating fibromyalgia patients, and continues to review current research and mental health interventions for daily implementation with her patients, with a focus on self compassion.
Mr Max Martin is an Accredited Exercise Scientists and Physiologist and experienced educator and practitioner in the musculo-skeletal rehabilitation field. When not with his beautiful family, Max can be found either running or riding through trails in the Adelaide Hills, or at his private practice applying corrective exercise techniques to a wide variety of clients.
