Prescribing Exercise to Improve the Lives of People with Congenital Heart Disease: A primer for Accredited Exercise Physiologists Podcast
People born with congenital heart disease (CHD) now commonly live well into adulthood, but experience lower levels of fitness compared with their peers. Although the benefits of physical activity and exercise are well recognised in other chronic conditions, and cardiac rehabilitation is a standard of care in acquired cardiovascular disease, exercise training for the CHD population has historically been under-underutilised due to unfounded safety concerns and lack of access to exercise programs conducted by appropriately trained exercise professionals. For many congenital heart conditions, there is an absence of effective medication and recent research suggests exercise may indeed be the best medicine.
This podcast will provide a detailed overview of different congenital heart conditions and their clinical characteristics. It will explicitly their impact on the exercise response and provide considerations and recommendations for exercise training in children, adolescents and adults living with CHD.

Presented by Associate Professor Andrew Maiorana, BSc, MSc, PhD, AEP and Dr Rachael Cordina, MBBS, PhD, FRACP
Associate Professor Andrew Maiorana is a research academic with the School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science at Curtin University and a practicing Accredited Exercise Physiologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital in the fields of cardiac rehabilitation and heart failure management. Andrew’s research focuses on optimising exercise testing and training in cardiovascular disease and developing new approaches to clinical practice to improve health outcomes for patients.
Dr Rachael Cordina is a clinical academic cardiologist from Sydney, Australia with special interests in Fontan and exercise physiology. Her PhD research studying the impact of resistance training in young people with a Fontan circulation won the Young Investigator Award from the Cardiovascular Disease in the Young Council at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in 2012. Rachael undertook post-doctoral training in London, United Kingdom as Clinical Fellow in Adult Congenital Heart Disease at the Heart Hospital, University College and as Adult Congenital Heart Disease Echocardiography Fellow at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Currently, she works in the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Service at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She is Vice-Chair of the ANZ Fontan Registry, Steering Committee Member of the Congenital Heart Alliance of ANZ and a Senior Lecturer at University of Sydney.
