The Health and Fitness of Paramedics

The Health and Fitness of Paramedics

Paramedics deliver care in urban, regional and rural Australia, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The context of their work environment may affect their health and fitness. Join Dr Alex MacQuarrie, a paramedic and paramedic researcher as he explores the context of their work and health and implications for you as an exercise professional.

This is a recording of an ESSA webinar presented on 14 September 2020.

Presented by Dr Alex MacQuarrie, B.SC., MBA, PhD, CCP(f), RP

Dr Alex MacQuarrie is a registered paramedic and Senior Lecturer in the Griffith University School of Medicine on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Originally from Prince Edward Island, Canada, he has had an interesting career in emergency services including over 20 years as a paramedic in many settings: rural, offshore and urban environments as well as a flight paramedic in the fixed wing and rotor operations. Alex has a Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration and recently completed his PhD. That thesis looked at the context and correlates of paramedic health status and its effect on job performance. His passion is paramedic wellness and ensuring these health care providers are fit for duty. Alex also has over twenty years experience as a volunteer firefighter in suburban and rural fire departments in Canada and Australia.
