Announcement from the ESSA Board - Esteemed CEO departs ESSA after 17 years of service

14 November 2023

Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) has bid farewell to CEO Anita Hobson-Powell, who concluded her tenure at ESSA earlier this month after an incredible 17 years of dedicated service and outstanding achievements.

Anita has played an integral role in ESSA’s growth and success, consistently demonstrating exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment, and an unparalleled passion for the association’s purpose.

From humble beginnings, ESSA has evolved into a thriving organisation of 11,000 members and more than 50 staff, all committed to supporting members in their mission to improve the health and performance of Australians through exercise and sports science.

President Dr Brendan Joss said Anita was instrumental in helping the organisation achieve such remarkable milestones.

“ESSA has been on an incredible journey of growth and achievement over the past two decades under Anita’s leadership, and we owe a debt of gratitude for her tireless efforts and the countless sacrifices she has made to ensure our organisation’s success.

“Her legacy will continue to shape our organisation's future, and we are confident that the strong foundation she built will guide us towards even greater achievements.”

ESSA is now actively engaged in the search for a new CEO who will continue to embody the values, mission and aspirations of the association.

Meanwhile, Corporate Services Manager Carmen Jenkinson has been appointed to Acting CEO to continue to successfully guide the organisation during the recruitment period.

While the Board and leadership team understand that change can be accompanied by uncertainty, they are dedicated to making this transition as seamless as possible.

“The support and trust of our members are invaluable to ESSA. We are confident that this change will lead to a bright future for ESSA, and we look forward to this journey of transformation together,” Dr Joss said.

Ms Hobson-Powell said: “I want to express my deep appreciation to all the wonderful people I had the pleasure of working with over the 17 years – I could never have imagined the incredible journey that awaited me when I first joined ESSA in 2006.

“I have shared countless triumphs, challenges, and moments for growth with the amazing team of staff, volunteers and members.

“Together we have built not just a successful and respected organisation, but a work family that I will always hold dear to my heart.

“I will be taking time over the next few months to consider what my next chapter might be.”

The Board will formally acknowledge and celebrate Anita’s contribution to ESSA in the near future.
