Professional Standards


ESSA Professional Standards for Accreditation describe the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and abilities expected of an individual to gain entry to and meet the ongoing minimum expectations of an ESSA accreditation.

Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) Professional Standards

The AES Professional Standards for Accreditation describes the minimum knowledge and skills to work across all areas of exercise science.

Accredited Exercise Scientist Professional Standards (2020)
A revised set of AES Professional Standards were approved by the ESSA Board in 2020. These standards will come into effect from 1 January 2022.

The AEP Professional Standards for Accreditation describe the core elements of effective and ethical clinical exercise physiology practice.

A revised set of AEP Professional Standards were approved by the ESSA Board in 2021. These standards will come into effect from 1 January 2023.

The Level 1 ASpS Professional Standards describe the minimum requirements to practise lawfully, safely and effectively as an ASpS.

Accredited Sports Scientist (ASpS) Level 2 Professional Standards

The Level 2 ASpS Professional Standards expand on the Level 1 ASpS Professional Standards. Level 2 ASpS have advanced knowledge, skills and expertise in sports science that are applied within the sub-disciplines including Performance Analysis, Skill Acquisition, Sports Biomechanics, Sports Physiology and Strength Science.

Accredited High Performance Manager (AHPM) Professional Standards    

The AHPM Professional Standards describe the advanced knowledge, skills and experience an AHPM has in their area of sports science expertise and leadership and management experience.
