The Future of Exercise Careers

Join the ESSA QLD State Chapter for an insightful event featuring industry professionals who have pursued diverse career paths within the exercise field. These paths include research, clinical exercise, high-performance training, exercise science, and alternative careers such as medical care. Following the presentations, enjoy an hour of catering and networking with these experts to discuss first-hand insights into careers in the exercise industry.

Professor Jeff Coombes, PhD, MEd, BAppSc, Bed (Hons), AES, AEP, FESSA

Jeff has been at the University of Queensland since 2000. He is a past President of ESSA (2006 – 2011), and has been the Chair of the Exercise is Medicine Australia initiative since 2012. His research interests include optimising exercise for improving health and the mechanisms of exercise-related benefits. As of October 2022, he has 350 Medline publications, written three textbooks, been a CI on $17.5 million in funding, graduated 29 PhD students as Principal Advisor and has a Scopus H Index of 60 with >13,000 citations.

 

Jessica Watzek, AES, AEP

Jessica is an accredited exercise physiologist specialising in work health and safety and ergonomics. She has a keen interest in the analysis of work health and safety datasets to identify trends and design interventions to manage risk. Jessica strives to combine her research-based project management, communication skills, and work health and safety knowledge within the private or public sector to integrate safety for all. She has further experience in occupational rehabilitation, return to work, and injury management.

 

Will Brown

William Brown, the Academy Head of Athletic Performance for the Queensland Reds, brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the rugby arena. With a career deeply rooted in the sport, Brown has risen through the ranks, earning respect and admiration for his tactical prowess and leadership skills. Under his guidance, the Queensland Reds have experienced unprecedented success, clinching titles and cementing their status as a formidable force in the rugby world.
Brown's coaching philosophy revolves around fostering a culture of teamwork, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence. He instills in his players a strong sense of camaraderie and determination, empowering them to push beyond their limits and achieve greatness on the field. With his strategic insights and unwavering dedication, Brown continues to inspire his team to new heights, leaving an indelible mark on the Queensland Reds and the rugby community as a whole.

 

David Gahan, AES, AEP

David has 4 years of experience within a multi-disciplinary private clinic treating a broad range of patients, from chronic disease management to athletic development, specialising in the injury rehabilitation, return-to-work and pre-employment screening space. Has been a mentor of new graduate exercise physiologists for the previous 3 years.
