ESSA WA Mental Health First Aid Workshop
The ESSA Western Australia State Chapter are proudly presenting a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course for ESSA WA Exercise & Sports Science Professionals.
About 1 in 5 Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training will teach you practical skills to support someone with a mental health problem. Make a real difference to people in your community. This course will teach you how to provide initial support to other adults aged 18-65 who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based Action Plan. Mental Health First Aid teach participants how to assist people who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help.

Mental Health Crises Covered:
Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
Panic attacks
Traumatic events
Severe psychotic states
Severe effect from drugs
Aggressive behaviours
Presented by Thriving Minds
Dr Kemi Wright (AES AEP) and Dr Bonnie Furzer (AES AEP FHEA) will be delivering this course, and in addition to their role as MHFA instructors hold clinical and educational roles related to exercise, mental health and illness. Both have extensive experience working within community and acute mental health settings across the lifespan, and in a variety of settings.
