Return to Physical Activity & Exercise After Covid Webinar

Return to Physical Activity & Exercise After Covid Webinar
This PDO will inform AES and AEP members on the risks of returning to activity too soon and make recommendations on how to adopt a staged approach to return to pre-Covid-19 activity levels.

Return to Physical Activity and Exercise Training After SARS-Covid-19 Infection

People with COVID-19 infection were, both during their illness and for some time afterwards, at increased risk of a broad range of cardiovascular disorders, including:
Cerebrovascular disorders, dysrhythmia, ischemic and non– ischemic heart disease, pericarditis, myocarditis, congestive heart failure and thromboembolic disease. Each person must weigh up their health risks and benefits in determining when, how and how much, with respect to their return to physical activity or exercise training. Prolonged periods of sedentary behaviour carry increased risks for several chronic illnesses, but this has to be balanced against the risk of serious cardiovascular illness if one returns to physical activity too soon. These risks are greatest in those people who experience ‘long Covid-19’. This PDO will inform AES and AEP members on the risks of returning to activity too soon and make recommendations on how to adopt a staged approach to return to pre-Covid-19 activity levels.

Presented by Professor Neil Smart, PhD, M.Med.Sci., Bsc Hons, ESSAF

Neil is a Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at the University of New England. His main research interests the management of chronic disease through exercise therapy, but specifically the role of intermittent ischaemia and hypoxia, delivered using different exercise training approaches, such as isometric- and high-intensity interval-exercise training. Neil has worked extensively with people with heart failure and hypertension. Neil has published more than 130 journal articles of the various benefits of exercise training in patients with a broad range of chronic diseases.
