Exercise Management in Multiple Sclerosis Podcast

Multiple sclerosis is a complex, highly individualised degenerative neurological condition. There is a wide range of potential impairment presentations, with several significantly affecting an individuals ability to exercise. For example heat sensitivity, neuromuscular fatigue, central fatigue, muscle weakness, spasticity and pain for example. However there has been substantial research published supporting the benefits of exercise for improving these impairments as well as function and quality of life. More exciting is the recent international discussions around the potential of exercises role on neurological protection and promotion of remyelination.

This podcast will cover practical application of how to safely exercise, educated and work with the MS population. Covering details of exercise variety, intensity, durations and repetitions. In specific this talk will discuss the latest research based recommended exercise guidelines for each stage of the MS trajectory.

Presented by Gilly Davy

Graduated in the UK in 2004, where she worked before working in New Zealand for six years and obtaining her post graduate certificate in health and rehab science. Gilly then moved to the Advance Rehab Centre in Sydney for three and half years in which she started MS Get a Head Start and launched Connect Neuro Physiotherapy. She then returned to New Zealand in 2016, where she provided clinic based treatment in Auckland, public speaking, lecturing, teaching and consulting roles under her own company Connect Neuro Physiotherapy. She closed Connect Neuro Physiotherapy to focus on her clinical career and now works as the clinical lead for Active+ Neuro Physio. Gilly Davy is the founder and director of the MS Get a Head Start. Gilly is passionate about the changing world of physical rehabilitation and exercise for Multiple Sclerosis. The innovative MS Get a Head Start Program has been a brain child of Gilly’s since 2012. She researched, trialled and developed the MS Get a Head Start program by  pulling together a wide range of evidence based approaches and combing the unique approach of interval training exercise, education and ultimate self management. The program was initial trialled at the Advance Rehab Centre in Sydney, where the outstanding results achieved fuelled Gilly to take this program further. In 2019 Gilly launched the program internationally.
