Travel in Elite Sport: Challenges and Solutions Podcast
Not only will this podcast outline the impact that long-haul travel has on the body, but also provide practical, evidence-based solutions for the busy practitioner to implement with their athletes. This includes the judiciously timed use of light, melatonin and exercise to resynchronise the bodies circadian system to the new time-zone, together with strategies to reduce sleep disruption and the risk of illness.

Travel in Elite Sport: Challenges and Solutions Podcast

With the increasing globalisation of elite sport and the money associated with it, athletes’ competition and travel schedules are becoming increasingly congested. For example, data from Fifpro collected on 16 elite soccer players across the 2018-19 season found they played almost 80 matches and travelled over 110,000 km. Due to the unique geographical positioning of Australia, the travel demands faced by elite Australian athletes is also high.

Long-haul travel across multiple time-zones wreaks havoc on multiple processes occurring within the body, which if not appropriately dealt with can seriously derail an athlete’s preparation for and performance in competition.

The recording is of a webinar presented by ESSA on 16 December 2019.

Presented by Dr Peter Fowler, PhD, ESSAM, AES, ASpS2
