Media Statement: ESSA Congratulates Latest Fellowships

ESSA Fellowship is available to Full members of ESSA and recognises those who have achieved a high level of professional accomplishment, responsibility and service to ESSA.

“The awarding of an ESSA Fellowship allows us to recognise a long-standing member that has made a significant impact on the industry and has continued to provide their support and dedication to the association,” says ESSA Chief Executive Officer, Anita Hobson-Powell.

ESSA wishes to congratulate the following two members on this achievement and thank them for their service to ESSA and the industry so far.

  • Associate Professor Prue Cormie
  • Ms Angela Douglas

Associate Professor Prue Cormie has a distinguished career in exercise and sports science and continues to demonstrate outstanding contributions to clinical exercise physiology research and practice. Prue has also contributed to ESSA directly via development of ESSA’s consensus statement on exercise in cancer care, developed a number of cancer-related CPD courses, served on the ESSA Professional Standards (Advisory) Council, and was Co-Chair for ESSA’s Research to Practice Conference (2018).

Prue’s list of achievements is amazing given the relatively short time that she has been an academic and practitioner. Notably, the quality of her research outputs, leading the development of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia position statement on exercise in cancer care (which received national media attention), and founding and leading the EX-MED Cancer health service. It’s with these achievements and more that has made her a very worthy recipient of the ESSA Fellowship.

Ms Angela Douglas has been a long-standing member of ESSA and has continually served the organisation during this time. Angela has made substantial contributions, particularly with representation on the ESSA Professional Standards (Advisory) Council. Additionally, she has made significant contributions to ESSA via her work in the review of the exercise physiology and exercise science standards, scope of practice framework, and review of professional development policy and procedures.

Angela is also acknowledged as leading development of several policies that contributed to ESSA’s successful application for professional membership with the National Alliance of Self-Regulating Health Professions (NASRHP). Angela’s demonstrated long-term commitment and service to ESSA, which spans across both the exercise physiology and exercise science streams, as well as her work-ethic and passion, is why Angela has been awarded ESSA Fellowship.

“Both Prue and Angela are highly-regarded professionals that have made significant contributions to the organisation and who have been rightfully recognised by their peers. They join a growing list of female leaders and Fellows who are guiding our industry forward,” adds Anita.

ESSA Fellowship applications are accepted bi-annually on 30th June and 1st December each year. ESSA members will be reminded in the coming weeks of this opportunity should they wish to apply
