Celebrating Research to Practice

As we reflect on the growth of the industry, parallels can be drawn to the growth of ESSA's biennial conference, Research to Practice, which remains one of the world's best after 17 years.

Across all areas of sport and exercise science, Research to Practice reflects the importance of practice that is underpinned by sound scientific evidence, and the need to promote the effective translation of research into day-to-day practice.

The first AAESS annual conference was held in Brisbane in 2004 with the theme ‘From Research to Practice’. The event created a place for like-minded exercise and sports science individuals to gather, providing a hub for the sharing of information and ideas.

The Research to Practice conferences have been a great success since then, with the size and number of attendees increasing with each event. In 2016, it became the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and in 2018, the conference saw registrations from 14 countries including Australia.

There is no disputing the valuable opportunity the event affords for further education development for ESSA professionals, helping ensure service delivery is backed by the latest findings in exercise and sport research. On top of this, the conferences have created a great environment for acknowledging new research and the achievements of ESSA members.

The introduction of significant prizes and recognition for outstanding research by young and early career researchers, including an exchange award with the European College of Sport Science, has further lifted the profile and quality of the conference.

The opportunity to foster world class research that directly informs practice and to bring the researchers and practitioners together exemplifies the strong evidence base for the professions.

Moving forward virtually
COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world in a range of ways, including how conferences, which have been traditionally face-to-face events, around the globe are hosted.

After much thought and consideration, ESSA have made the decision in late 2020to deliver the Research to Practice 2021 conference virtually.

This delivery format provided an opportunity to those who wouldn't be able to experience the conference due to the COVID-19 situation, whilst maintaining our high-level program and content.

ESSA's priority is always the safety of our professionals and ensuring the safety of those in our communities and industry was also a consideration.

After going ahead in May of this year, our first ever virtual Research to Practice conference was a total success!

We were thrilled to be able to continue on the reputation and legacy that Research to Practice provides the exercise and sports science industry, this time, from the comfort of our own homes and offices.

Over 1,100 delegates attended the three-day program and enjoyed the wide range of presenters and sessions, across a variety of specialisations. Popular presentations included that of Professor Andy Jones, Professor Lorimer Moseley AO, Professor Fiona Wood AM, Emeritus Professor Brian Dawson, and Emeritus Professor Julie R Steele AM.

It's important to thank the Conference Co-Chairs and Committee who dedicated two years to bring this conference to life. Their dedication and passion created a high-quality program that received high praise from all delegates.

$10,000 was also raised for our Conference Charity, Pain Revolution through the funds raised from every paying registration.
