How Can We Better Treat Chronic Lower Back Pain? Webinar

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a complex multifaceted condition that is one of the most prevalent medical disorders in today’s societies,]. CLBP is classified as back pain localized above the gluteal fold, and below the costal margin, that persists for a minimum duration of 12 weeks. CLBP accounts for ~ 80% of the direct cost of low back pain, with clinicians unable to make a specific diagnosis in up to 90% of patients, therefore classifying patients as having nonspecific CLBP. Although acknowledged as a multifactorial condition, it has also been suggested that deconditioning of the posterior chain muscles, i.e. those found in the thoracic, lumbar and posterior hip region, is a contributing risk factor for low back pain. Maintaining sufficient muscular strength and endurance as well as adequate levels of motor control of the posterior chain musculature that allow the performance of a variety of occupational, sport and recreational activities with minimum risk of injury should be considered an important goal of this rehabilitation.
This webinar will discuss treatment options for CLBP, with a focus on the results of a recent meta-analysis that examined whether focus on posterior chain resistance training provided additional benefits compared to general exercise and walking programmes for the treatment of CLBP.
 

Presented by Dr Justin Keogh, ASpS2

Associate Professor Justin Keogh is currently the Associate Dean of Research for the Faculty of Health Science and Medicine, Bond University. He is an Accredited Sport Scientist with ESSA (ASpSc2) and an accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach with ASCA (Level II - Professional). His research achievements in the area of geriatric exercise prescription and sports biomechanics/strength and conditioning have been acknowledged by three Fellowships i.e. Australian Association of Gerontology, International Society of Biomechanics in Sport as well as Exercise and Sports Science Australia.

He currently supervises 5 PhD students, across a variety of sport science areas, with these projects involving athletes from swimming, field hockey, women’s Australian football, rugby league and super Sprint triathlon. He is currently on the editorial board for a number of journals including Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Journal of Sport Science and Medicine and PeerJ.

In his spare time, Justin enjoys spending time with his family, practising Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, going to the gym, playing poker, reading science fiction and thriller books and enjoying craft beers and spirits.
