Adolescent Physical Activity Webinar

Adolescent Physical Activity Webinar
This presentation will focus on the 24-hour movement guidelines for children and young people ages 5-17, physical activity and sedentary behaviour patterns of adolescents (including changes over time and sex differences), correlates of adolescents' physical activity and sedentary behaviours, and strategies to meaningfully and effectively engage adolescents in physical activities.

Adolescent Physical Activity Webinar

According to the Australian 24-hour movement guidelines, children and young people ages 5-17 should participate in a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day, including muscle and bone strengthening activities on a minimum of three days per week (1). It is also recommended that sitting time for this population is broken down as often as possible and that sedentary recreational screen time is limited to no more than 2 hours of per day (this does not include screen time needed for school work) (1). Both national and international data indicate the vast majority adolescents do not meet physical activity recommendations and exceed recreational screen time recommendations (2-6). Available evidence also points to a decrease in physical activity levels from childhood to adolescence and highlights sex differences, with females typically exhibiting lower levels of physical activity and a steeper decline in physical activity engagement over time (4-8). The adolescent population is therefore one we need to pay particular attention to in terms of supporting physical activity participation.
