AEP Case Conference: Mental Health

AEP Case Conferences are online Learning activity discussions designed to support AEPs build confidence in clinical practice. They aim to provide an opportunity for a small group of AEPs to discuss best practice approaches for a specific client (case). 

What is covered?
Two expert AEPs, Dr. Oscar Lederman and Laura (Law) Edwards will facilitate a small group discussion for a client referred by a GP under a chronic disease management plan to treat depression and anxiety. The secondary purpose of the referral is to manage T2DM and obesity.

We will discuss how to approach each stage of a client’s journey – from referral, assessment, design of intervention and delivery to monitoring, review and reporting. 

How can AEPs benefit?
• Identify the most appropriate and relevant options for assessment and exercise prescription
• Understand the application of clinical reasoning 
• Understand how to best manage client expectations and referrer obligations
• Opportunity to ask the experts questions, seek feedback on current practice and gain confidence in treating clients with mental illness and comorbidities.

Expert AEPs  

Dr Oscar Lederman 
Oscar is Clinical lead and Accredited Exercise Physiologist at the Keeping the Body in Mind program, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service. Oscar is also a conjoint lecturer and academic at the University of New South Wales, Sydney in the Exercise Physiology Department. Oscar’s has 7 years experience working within the mental health field and his research and advocacy has been key in defining the role and scope of practice of exercise professionals in mental health. Oscar regularly provides education and training for students and professionals regarding the role of exercise in mental healthcare and is a published author. 

Laura (Law) Edwards
Law is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist with a Masters degree from The University of Sydney. Law has six years’ experience designing, implementing and evaluating exercise programs to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals from disadvantaged communities, with a significant focus on mental health. Law has been prescribing exercise for the prevention and management of chronic health issues within: the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network at the Forensic Hospital, Long Bay; the Wayside Chapel working with individuals experiencing homelessness, drug & alcohol addiction and mental illness; SESLHD Community Mental health in the Keeping the Body In Mind (KBIM) team and the Bulbuwil Aboriginal Healthy lifestyle program in Primary Integrated & Community Health
