How do I become an Accredited Exercise Physiologist?

To become an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) you need to meet the following:

  1. Accredited Exercise Scientist Standards
  2. Accredited Exercise Physiologist Standards
  3. At least 500 hours of practical experience
    • 140 hours of eligible exercise science experience
    • 360 hours of exercise physiology experience

There are three pathways to meeting the AEP requirements:

A. Four-Year Undergraduate Course
  • Successful completion of a four-year course accredited by ESSA at the level of both exercise science (ES) and exercise physiology (EP).  You are eligible for this pathway if your course held Provisional or Full course accreditation at the time you completed it
  • Meet all the entry requirements for ESSA practitioner accreditation

B. Three-Year Undergraduate ES Course (Accredited) + Postgraduate EP Course
  • Meet the Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) requirements through the ESSA-accredited ES course pathway
  • Successful completion of an ESSA-accredited postgraduate EP course
  • Meet all the entry requirements for ESSA practitioner accreditation

C. Three-Year Undergraduate ES Course (Non-Accredited) + Postgraduate EP Course
  • Meet the Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) requirements through the non-ESSA accredited ES course pathway
  • Successful completion of an ESSA-accredited postgraduate EP course
  • Meet all the entry requirements for ESSA practitioner accreditation

NOTE: To enter an ESSA-accredited postgraduate course in exercise physiology, the course provider may ask you to confirm you have met the Exercise Science Standards and practicum requirements by providing a Graduate Entry (GE) assessment outcome letter from ESSA. Please see the Graduate Entry assessment section for more information.

It is not mandatory to gain or hold exercise science accreditation (AES) prior to applying for AEP, however all Pathway B or C applicants will be assessed against the AES requirements through either graduate entry assessment or assessment at the time of AEP application.
